Supplication 12: …

We have entered a new day upon the natural religion of Islam, upon the statement of sincerity, upon the religion of our Prophet Muhammad (SallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam), and upon the path of our father Ibrahim. He was upright (in worshipping Allah), and a Muslim. He was not of those who worship others besides Allah

To be recited once

Brief Commentary

  • In the evening, we change the word أصبحنا to أمسينا, so we say أمسينا على فطرة الإسلام
  • This doesn’t change the meaning much, but it makes it more appropriate that we begin the supplication by mentioning our current period of the day, which is the evening
  • The Prophet (SallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) is reported to have said this supplication in the morning and evening [1]
  • It is from the blessings of Allah that He made our natural disposition to be in conformance with the teachings of Islam, hence Islam is the natural religion to follow
  • We remind ourselves of this every morning and evening so that we can remind ourselves that we are following the religion that is in conformance to our nature, and this makes it easier to accept and follow
  • The statement of sincerity, is the testimony that none is worthy of worship except Allah i.e. it is the first pillar from the five pillars of Islam
  • It is called the statement of sincerity as we should say it with complete sincerity to its meanings and what in entails. It is also called the statement of purity, as when we say it, we are purifying our beliefs from associating any partners with Allah, and our worship is purely for Allah alone
  • We affirm that we are following the religion of our Prophet Muhammad (SallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) as this is the only religion that is acceptable to Allah [2]
  • We also affirm that we are on the path of our father Ibrahim (alayhi assalam), to remind ourselves that we are not the first people to really follow this monotheist religion, and this is that path of the righteous before the revelation to our Prophet Muhammad (SallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam)

Action Points

  • Whenever you say this supplication, ensure your heart is filled with awe of Allah as He has made the religion easy for you by creating you to naturally follow this religion
  • If you ever find yourself straying away from the commandments of Allah, then realise that you are not only disobeying Allah, but you are going against the nature of your creation
  • The statement that none is worthy of worship except Allah is a very strong statement and testimony, so ensure you ponder over its meanings and realise the magnitude of this statement every time you say it
  • Whenever you testify that none is worthy of worship except Allah, ensure it is not just coming from your lips, but you are saying it from your heart too. It is the statement of sincerity after all, so you must be sincere when saying it
  • We are the true followers of the path of Ibrahim (alayhi assalam), so ensure it is known that we are the ones who truly follow this path, and that the other religions have significantly strayed from this path
